# Scarifying and aerating your lawn

Scarifying cuts through thatch and moss, while aerating loosens compacted soil. We explain when to do it, what depth is safe and what to do afterwards.

**Scarifying** is typically done from March to April and from September to October, roughly once or twice a year on an established lawn. **Aerating** (aeration) deals with compacted soil using spikes, whereas scarifying cuts through thatch and moss with blades to a depth of 2 to 4 mm. A hand tool is enough for a small area and the edges. A powered scarifier saves your back in a larger garden. After the job, always rake up the debris, overseed if needed and water lightly. At Zakservices in Senica, we’ll take the time to show you what suits your lawn and our current stock. It also ties in with [preparing your machine in spring](https://www.zakservices.sk/en/spring-prep-autumn-storage/) and with deciding whether to [mulch or collect](https://www.zakservices.sk/en/mulching-vs-bagging/) afterwards.

## What scarifying and aerating are

These two terms are often confused in everyday speech. In practice, they have different aims.

### Scarifying

Scarifying means **cutting through** the top layer of the lawn. Rotating blades (or a hand scarifying rake) slice through thatch, moss and dead material. The depth is shallow, typically 2 to 4 mm. The aim isn’t to ‘plough’ the lawn but to open up the surface so that water, air and nutrients reach the roots and the tillering zone. The lawn then thickens up better.

### Aerating (aeration)

Aerating deals with **compacted soil**. Spikes or hollow tines make holes deeper into the soil profile. This helps water soak in and lets the roots breathe, especially where people walk a lot, where cars park or where the soil is heavy clay.

Some machines have an interchangeable roller: a blade roller for scarifying and a spring-tine roller for gentler raking out. That’s practical, but two different principles still apply. You cut thatch with blades. You relieve compaction with spikes.

### When to do which

- lots of moss, a felt-like layer, surface water draining poorly after rain → more likely **scarifying**
- hard soil, standing water, the lawn ‘breathes’ poorly after being trampled → more likely **aerating**
- a neglected lawn → often **scarifying first, then aerating**, followed by overseeding

## When and how often

### In spring

In spring, it pays to wait until the lawn is clearly greening up and the soil is no longer waterlogged. Around Senica, this is typically **from March to April**, depending on the weather. Mow the lawn once or twice beforehand. If it’s very weak after winter, wait another week or two and let it build up strength first.

### In autumn

Autumn is often the **most rewarding** time. Temperatures still support growth, there’s more moisture and the lawn has time to thicken up before winter. Aim for the period **from September to October**. If the summer was dry and the lawn has thinned out, don’t overdo the depth in autumn. A lighter cut is safer.

### Frequency

For a typical ornamental lawn, **once or twice a year** is enough. More treatments are more likely to weaken the lawn than strengthen it. Football pitches are a different regime with a different workload. A home garden doesn’t need to copy them.

### When not to do anything

- a young lawn up to roughly 2 to 3 years after it was sown (the roots aren’t strong enough yet)
- waterlogged, muddy soil (the blades rip out clumps)
- completely dry, baked ground (a poor cut, wear on the blades)
- a hot, dry summer (the grass recovers poorly)
- frost and a frozen surface

## Step by step

1. **Mow** the lawn to a height of roughly 3 to 4 cm and let it rest briefly (ideally a day or two, depending on the weather).
2. **Check the soil.** It should be slightly moist, not mushy.
3. **Set the blade depth** to 2 to 4 mm. Start on the shallow side. You can always go deeper, but you can’t put ripped-out roots back.
4. **Go over the area** in one direction and then crosswise. An even cut is better than one deep pass.
5. **Rake up or collect** all the material you’ve raked out. A thick layer of thatch on the surface smothers recovery.
6. **Overseed** bare patches with a suitable seed mix, if needed.
7. **Water** gently and regularly until the lawn recovers. Keep heavy foot traffic off it for 1 to 3 weeks, depending on its condition.

After scarifying, the lawn often looks ‘scruffy’ for a while. That’s normal. With the right depth and enough moisture, it usually thickens up quickly.

## Hand tool or powered machine

| Criterion | Hand scarifier / scarifying rake | Powered (electric or petrol) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Area | small areas, typically about 100 to 150 m² | medium and large areas |
| Edges and corners | excellent | finish off with hand tools |
| Effort | more physical work | less effort, higher productivity |
| Noise | almost none | more (especially petrol) |
| Maintenance | simple | blades, roller, and the engine, cable or battery |
| Price guide | lower outlay in euros | higher outlay in euros, depending on power and width |

### When hand power is enough

A hand tool makes sense for a small front garden, for narrow strips between flower beds and as a **finishing touch** after a pass with a powered machine. You have full control over the pressure. The downside is the time and the fatigue.

### When to go powered

An electric machine is convenient for a typical garden with access to a socket. You’ll appreciate a petrol model on a larger area (roughly 400 m² and up), on harder soil and where a cable gets in the way. Cordless models are a compromise between freedom of movement and battery run time.

At Zakservices, we mainly deal with the brands we work with every day: **STIHL, STIGA, WOLF-Garten, Cub Cadet, SUPA TECHNIKA and DAKR**. We’ll check the specific model and availability in stock. We don’t make up part numbers from behind a desk.

Before the season, the same applies to a scarifier as to a lawnmower: a clean roller, sharp blades and a checked drive. You’ll find a detailed seasonal checklist in our article on [spring preparation and autumn winterising](https://www.zakservices.sk/en/spring-prep-autumn-storage/).

## Afterwards: overseeding, water, mulching and collection

Scarifying opens up space for overseeding. The seed has better contact with the soil. Keep the surface moist, but not waterlogged.

What should you do with the raked-out material? **Collect it.** It isn’t the fine mulch you get from regular mowing. It’s thatch, moss and dead material. Leaving it lying there would defeat the whole point of the job. With regular mowing afterwards, you’ll again decide whether to mulch or collect depending on the moisture and the height of the grass. We cover this in our article [Mulching or collecting in a grass box](https://www.zakservices.sk/en/mulching-vs-bagging/).

After overseeding and gentle watering, give the lawn some time to do its work. Keep the first few mows after recovery on the high side. A blunt blade on a STIHL, STIGA, WOLF-Garten, Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA lawnmower would tear the young seedlings. A sharp edge and a clean cutting deck are part of calm, careful lawn care, not an optional extra.

## Common mistakes

1. **Cutting too deep.** The roots get torn and recovery takes a long time.
2. **Working in mud.** Both the machine and the lawn suffer.
3. **Scarifying a young lawn.** Wait until it’s properly rooted.
4. **Leaving the thatch on the lawn.** Scarifying without collecting is only half the job.
5. **Scarifying in the heat.** The grass can’t grow back in time and dries out.
6. **Confusing it with mulching.** Fine mulch from mowing breaks down in the lawn. Coarse thatch from scarifying has to go.
7. **Neglecting the machine.** Blunt blades and a clogged roller increase the effort and damage the surface.

## Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

### 1. How many times a year should I scarify?
In a typical garden, once or twice is enough. Spring and autumn are the main windows.

### 2. Is aerating the same as scarifying?
No. Scarifying cuts through thatch on the surface. Aerating relieves compacted soil with spikes.

### 3. What depth is safe?
Aim for 2 to 4 mm. Start shallow and watch that the blades aren’t pulling out whole clumps.

### 4. Can I scarify a new lawn?
Preferably not until roughly 2 to 3 years after it was sown, once it’s firmly rooted.

### 5. Is a hand scarifier enough for me?
Yes, for a small area and the edges. For a larger garden, a powered machine is more practical.

### 6. What should I do with the material after scarifying?
Rake it up or collect it. Don’t leave it as mulch.

### 7. When should I overseed?
Straight after clearing the area, while the soil is open. Then water gently.

### 8. Do I need a different machine for spring and autumn?
No. The same scarifier will handle both. You can change the depth and possibly the roller (blades or spring tines), as the manual says.

### 9. Does this have anything to do with my STIHL or STIGA lawnmower?
Yes, indirectly. You mow before and after scarifying. A sharp blade and the right choice of collecting or mulching help the lawn recover. We’ll check the model and parts against our stock.

### 10. Will scarifying get rid of moss for good?
It reduces moss and thatch, but if a shady spot stays damp and the soil is acidic, the moss can come back. Also look at light, watering and how densely the lawn is sown.
