# STIHL iMOW robotic mower: when it’s a yes and when it’s a no

A STIHL iMOW pays off for a lawn that’s kept short and mulched all the time and has a sensible shape. Find out when a conventional lawnmower or a ride-on mower wins instead.

![STIHL iMOW robotic mower on a lawn](https://www.zakservices.sk/assets/img/articles/stihl-imow-robot.d2c2f219.jpg)

A **STIHL iMOW robotic mower** usually pays off when you want a **lawn that’s kept short and mulched all the time** without pushing a machine every week, you have a **sensibly shaped area**, a slope within the model’s limit, and you’re willing to deal with the installation (perimeter wire, charging station, mowing schedule). It **isn’t an automatic choice** if you mow rarely and let the grass grow tall, have an extremely broken-up or steeply sloping plot, lots of low obstacles, or need collection in a grass box. In those cases, a conventional STIHL, STIGA or WOLF-Garten walk-behind lawnmower often serves you better, a DAKR for difficult growth, and a Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA ride-on mower on a large open area.

At Zakservices in Senica, we help you decide based on your **actual garden**, not the catalogue maximum. Below is a practical overview of when it’s a yes and when it’s a no. If you’re considering a robot without a perimeter wire, you’ll find a comparison in the article [Robotic mower with or without a wire](https://www.zakservices.sk/en/robotic-mower-wire-or-wire-free/).

## What you’ll learn in this article

- when a STIHL iMOW makes sense and what to expect from it
- how the shape of the lawn and obstacles reduce its real capacity
- slope: rough limits and what to check in the manual
- when a conventional walk-behind lawnmower or a ride-on mower still wins
- a decision table, FAQ and contact details in Senica

## What a STIHL iMOW does well (and what it doesn’t)

The **iMOW** mows **automatically and often**, **mulches** the grass into fine pieces and returns it to the lawn. It has no conventional grass box. It recharges in its station and carries on according to the schedule. The goal is a thick, regularly maintained lawn with a minimum of work for you.

**What it usually doesn’t do well without help:**

- the first cut of tall, wet or neglected grass
- collecting leaves and coarse material in a grass box
- mowing a meadow, weeds and heavy growth beyond the ornamental lawn
- crossing deep mud, gravel, large bumps or the open edges of a pond without a proper installation

That’s why an iMOW isn’t a ‘replacement for every lawnmower’. It’s a **system for regular upkeep** of an ornamental lawn. A conventional machine is still useful as a back-up, or as the better main choice.

## When it’s a yes: typical situations for an iMOW

Consider a STIHL iMOW if several of these points apply:

1. **You want to save time** and have the lawn mown continuously, rather than in one big session a week.
2. **The area fits the model class with some headroom.** As a rough guide (under the manufacturer’s ideal conditions): smaller areas around the iMOW 3 series (up to about 500 m²), medium ones around the 4 series (up to about 1000 m²), and the higher 5 / 6 / 7 series and EVO depending on the area. Always treat the maximum as an upper limit under ideal conditions.
3. **The shape is manageable** (a continuous area, reasonable passages, not dozens of isolated ‘islands’ with no plan).
4. **The slope is within the limit** of the specific model (as a rough guide, typically up to about 40%, often up to about 45% for EVO, or higher with approved accessories as specified by the manufacturer).
5. **You’re willing to prepare the garden** (wire, exclusion zones, a place for the station and, depending on the model, a wireless Wi-Fi connection).
6. **Mulching suits you**, and you’ll keep the lawn on the short side rather than letting it grow ‘long’ between fortnightly cuts.

If you’re often away and want a consistent look, the robotic approach is a strong argument. If you want to ‘mow everything into the grass box’ once a month, probably not.

## Lawn shape: why geometry matters more than square metres

The manufacturer states the **maximum area under ideal conditions**: few obstacles, simple geometry, gentle slopes, moderate growth. A broken-up plot **reduces** the capacity.

**A favourable shape**

- one main continuous area
- wider passages between parts of the garden
- few narrow ‘corridors’
- clear edges (kerbs, fences, walls) that are easy to follow neatly with the wire

**A difficult shape**

- lots of separate lawns (front garden, side of the house, the yard behind the garage)
- narrow gaps where the robotic mower wastes time manoeuvring
- a fruit orchard with a dense network of trunks
- flower beds without a firm edge, a pond, a play area, gravel

With a difficult shape, either:

- choose a **stronger class with area in reserve**, or
- plan for **several zones / carrying the mower between them**, depending on the installation, or
- accept that a **nimble walk-behind lawnmower** from STIHL, STIGA or WOLF-Garten will be more practical.

The shape isn’t cosmetic. It determines whether the robotic mower can cover the area in a reasonable time and whether it gets stuck in pointless manoeuvres.

## Obstacles: what the robotic mower can handle and what needs excluding

The iMOW has sensors and usually slows down and changes direction on contact. That doesn’t mean everything in the garden can be left ‘as it is’, though.

**These usually need the perimeter wire or an exclusion zone:**

- flower beds and rockeries without a firm edge at least about 10 cm high
- a pond, a pool, steps and places where there’s a risk of falling
- fragile decorations and objects that mustn’t be bumped
- low obstacles below the height the sensors reliably detect (according to the manual, often around 10 cm)

**Practical tips before installation:**

- tidy away toys, hoses and loose cables
- solid trees and large objects can be driven around, but a dense network of them reduces efficiency
- gravel, protruding roots and large bumps may be impassable for the robotic mower
- position the charging station as STIHL recommends (on level ground near a socket, in the shade if possible, at the bottom of any slope and with about 2 m clear of obstacles around the station)

If your garden is full of temporary obstacles and children, a robotic mower still works, but it requires **discipline from everyone around it**. Otherwise, it will often stop or change its route.

## Slope: when it’s a yes and when it’s a no

Slope is a common cause of disappointment. As a rough guide (always check the manual for the specific model):

| Type | Approximate maximum slope | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Standard iMOW series | up to about 40% | suitable for gentle and moderate slopes |
| EVO series | up to about 45% | more headroom for hillier plots |
| EVO 5 / 6 / 7 + manufacturer-approved upgrade kit | higher, according to the current manual | only with approved accessories from the manufacturer, check the limit and fitting |

**Important:**

- slope percentages aren’t something to ‘guess by eye’. On steeper slopes, have the dealer assess it or measure it yourself.
- with steeper slopes within the area, a **specific wire layout** may be needed (a longer run-up before and after the slope, as the manual says).
- a station at the top of a long slope may be a less fortunate choice than a position lower down.

If you have **sharp, short terraces, retaining walls and sudden drops**, a robotic mower may not be a safe choice even when the ‘average slope’ looks acceptable. In that case, a conventional lawnmower with a good self-propelled drive or a different maintenance concept is more sensible.

## When it’s a no: when a conventional mower or a ride-on still wins

### 1) Neglected, tall or wet grass
A robotic mower mulches best with **frequent short cuts**. If you mow rarely and the grass grows tall, a STIHL, STIGA or WOLF-Garten **petrol or cordless walk-behind lawnmower** will tame it better first. Then the iMOW can take over the upkeep.

### 2) You need collection in a grass box
If you want a clean surface without mulch (for example before seasonal lawn work, with a diseased lawn or when lots of leaves have fallen), a conventional lawnmower with collection is more practical. The iMOW has no grass box.

### 3) An extremely broken-up layout and lots of low obstacles
In an orchard, with narrow strips and dozens of small objects, a **nimble walk-behind lawnmower** can be faster and less frustrating than a robotic mower without an ideal installation.

### 4) Meadow, weeds, heavy growth
That’s not what the iMOW is for. Use a **STIHL brushcutter** or, depending on the situation, specialised DAKR mowing.

### 5) A large open area, and you want to sit down
If you have an area of roughly 1500 to 2000 m² or more, long straight strips and want to mow quickly every so often, a **Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA ride-on mower** may be the better main machine. A higher-class iMOW still makes sense if you prefer continuous automation. Some owners combine the two: a robotic mower for routine upkeep and a conventional mower or ride-on for the exceptions.

### 6) You don’t have the conditions for installation and maintenance
Without a place for the station and without the willingness to look after the wire, the blades, winter storage of the battery and the occasional service, a robotic mower won’t ‘look after the garden by itself’. At Zakservices, we can help with both the choice and the servicing, but the decision has to suit your household.

## Quick table: iMOW or another choice

| Situation | More likely iMOW | More likely another choice |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Regularly maintained ornamental lawn | yes | probably not |
| You want to save as much time as possible | yes | probably not |
| Mulching suits you | yes | if you want the grass collected: conventional mower with a grass box (STIHL, STIGA, WOLF-Garten) |
| Very broken-up orchard / narrow strips | only with headroom and a good installation | walk-behind lawnmower |
| Steep slope beyond the model’s limit | no | self-propelled walk-behind mower or another concept |
| Meadow / coarse growth | no | STIHL brushcutter, DAKR depending on the situation |
| Large open area, sitting down | higher-class iMOW or a combination | Cub Cadet / SUPA TECHNIKA ride-on mower |
| Infrequent mowing of tall grass | probably not as the only machine | conventional petrol / cordless mower |

## How to choose the class without disappointment

1. **Subtract the areas that don’t need mowing** (house, patio, flower beds, paths).
2. **Add a reserve** for a broken-up layout, slopes and growth during the season. Treat the manufacturer’s maximum as a ceiling, not a target.
3. **Measure the narrowest passages** and the slope of the steepest parts.
4. **Be honest about how often you mow.** A robotic mower loves regularity.
5. **Check the stock and model in Senica.** A catalogue table isn’t a tailored solution.

We always confirm the exact model designation and availability in the shop. Don’t choose from a photo or from a single m² figure.

## Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

### Is a STIHL iMOW worth it for a small front garden?
Yes, if you want convenience and mulching. Smaller areas can be handled too, sometimes with accessories as the manual describes. If the area is very small and you can mow it in a few minutes, a conventional electric or cordless lawnmower may be cheaper and simpler.

### Can an iMOW handle a slope by the house?
Gentle and moderate slopes, usually yes, within the model’s limit. Steep terraces, sudden drops and slopes beyond the limit, no. Check the percentages and the wire installation. If in doubt, we’ll assess it at your place or from photos and measurements in the shop.

### Do I still need a conventional lawnmower if I have a robotic mower?
Often yes, as a **back-up**: edges, the first cut after winter, wet tall grass, collection. Many owners combine an iMOW with a light STIHL or WOLF-Garten walk-behind lawnmower.

### Is a Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA a better choice than an iMOW?
If you want to **sit down and mow a large open area quickly**, a Cub Cadet or SUPA TECHNIKA ride-on mower may be the better main machine. If you want **automation every day**, the choice points to an iMOW. They aren’t rivals for the same job. They’re different styles of lawn care.

### What about the meadow behind the house?
An iMOW isn’t a meadow mower. Use a STIHL brushcutter there or, depending on the growth, a DAKR, and keep the robotic mower for the ornamental lawn.

### Won’t mulching by a robotic mower harm the lawn?
With regular short mowing, the mulch usually benefits the lawn as fine organic matter. A thick, wet layer and infrequent mowing can do harm. In that case, cut the grass down with a conventional lawnmower first.

### What are the running costs?
Allow for electricity for charging, occasional blade replacement, cleaning and servicing as the manual says. The exact costs depend on the area and the season. At Zakservices, we’ll also advise you on maintenance.

## How to prepare for your visit to the shop

Bring along or note down:

- the approximate area to be mown in m²
- a sketch of the shape (one continuous area or several parts)
- an estimate of the slope and the steepest spots
- obstacles (trees, a pond, flower beds, gates)
- whether you want to mulch only or also need collection
- whether you prefer full automation or a conventional machine / ride-on mower

A conversation of roughly 10 to 15 minutes often saves you from a bad decision for the whole season.
