In a typical home garden with a well-kept lawn, a good STIHL cordless lawnmower will usually mow a small to medium-sized area on one charge. The straight answer: how long does a cordless lawnmower battery last

In short, and without the marketing:

Small to medium capacity on an easy, regularly mown lawn is often enough for one mow of an area of a few hundred square metres.
Greater capacity or a second battery is a sensible choice when the area is approaching medium size or when you mow thicker growth.
Wet, tall or neglected grass can reduce the run time by tens of per cent compared with a dry, closely kept lawn.
The figure in the catalogue is a guide under ideal conditions. Your garden can push it up or down.

So when choosing a STIHL cordless lawnmower (and likewise other cordless models in our range), always consider not just the machine but also the battery capacity and the charger.

Capacity in Ah and Wh: what it tells you and what it doesn’t

On a battery you’ll often see Ah (amp hours) and, with STIHL, information about the system voltage too. To compare energy, it’s more practical to think in Wh (watt hours).

The rough relationship:

Wh ≈ V × Ah

A higher Wh figure means more stored energy. Two batteries with the same Ah but a different voltage won’t necessarily do the same amount of work. So when comparing within one STIHL platform (AK or AP, for example), compare capacities within the same range. AK and AP batteries are not interchangeable.

What Ah and Wh don’t do:

They don’t guarantee a specific number of square metres in every garden.
They’re no substitute for a sharp blade and a sensible cutting height.
They don’t tell you how quickly performance drops under heavy load (tall, wet grass).

What affects run time the most

1. Height and density of the grass

The taller and denser the grass, the more energy the blade uses per metre. Regular mowing (shorter intervals, less taken off each time) saves the battery. If you let the lawn get overgrown, a battery ‘vanishes’ faster, even on a smaller area.

2. Mulching or collecting in a grass box

Mulching chops the grass up and returns it to the lawn. At a sensible height, energy consumption can be moderate, and the work flows better without stops.

Collecting in a grass box adds airflow resistance and the weight of a full box. More frequent stops to empty it make the whole job take longer, but the energy consumption itself depends on the density and moisture of the grass. With wet grass, the deck and grass box clog more easily and the motor (or drive) works harder.

A practical tip: with longer or wet grass, first cut it down on a higher setting, then fine-tune. You save the battery and get a better cut.

3. Terrain and self-propelled drive

Level ground is kindest to the battery. Slopes, bumps and heavy use of the drive increase the power draw. If you set the self-propelled drive to maximum assistance on difficult ground, some of the energy goes into driving the wheels, not just the blade.

On a broken-up plot with trees and flower beds, you make more turns and restarts. That also shortens the practical run time compared with an ‘ideal’ rectangle with no obstacles.

4. Temperature

Batteries don’t like extremes. Cold temporarily reduces the available capacity. Heat puts a strain on the battery chemistry and on charging. Ideally, mow with a battery that hasn’t spent the night in the frost or the whole day in direct sun in a closed car boot.

5. Blade condition and a clean deck

A blunt blade tears instead of cutting. Consumption goes up, run time goes down and the lawn looks worse. A clogged deck with caked-on grass adds resistance. 6. Battery age and charging habits

Capacity gradually decreases with charge cycles. That’s normal. Don’t leave the battery completely flat for long periods. Store it somewhere dry at a moderate temperature, as the manufacturer’s manual says. With STIHL, follow the recommendations for your specific AK or AP system.

Realistic expectations for a typical Slovak garden

The following points are a guide, not a guarantee:

Storage: a dry place, out of direct frost and heat. Never a flat battery left ‘all winter’ without checking it as the manual says.
Charging: use the original charger, or one recommended by the manufacturer, for your STIHL system.
Contacts: keep them clean and dry. Don’t tamper with the battery mechanically.
Rotation: if you have two batteries, alternate them. That reduces the risk of one sitting completely flat for months.
After work: let the battery and the machine cool down before charging or storing them in an enclosed space.
Season: before winter, check the state of charge as the manual says. In spring, check that the battery holds its charge and that the charger shows a normal charging cycle.

How to extend run time while you mow

Mow more often and less severely rather than once in a long while, right down to the ground.
Set a higher cutting height for the first pass after rain or after a holiday.
Keep a sharp blade and a clean deck.
On a slope, don’t use the strongest drive setting unnecessarily if the terrain doesn’t require it.
Have a second battery charged in advance, not only once the first one cuts out in the middle of the lawn.
Don’t leave the lawnmower running idle during longer breaks.

When cordless is enough and when you need a different approach
