A DAKR drum mower cuts with a rotating cutting disc fitted with swinging blades. Instead of chopping the grass into a grass box, it lays it to one side in a neat windrow. That makes it suitable for drying hay, for carting away later or for composting.

The Czech brand DAKR builds its range around exactly this type of machine. In practice, these are single-axle or modular machines with interchangeable attachments (drum mower unit, mulcher, hay turner, snow plough and more). You’ll appreciate this if you have a meadow as well as other seasonal jobs.

What is a rotary mower

Choose a DAKR drum mower especially when at least one of these applies:

A meadow, orchard or unkempt area, where the grass grows tall.
Mowing only a few times a year, not every week.
You want hay, or at least a windrow to dry out and cart away later.
Uneven ground, molehills, stones and self-seeded saplings, where you need a more robust cutting system.
You want a modular DAKR system with interchangeable attachments for several jobs through the year.

When to choose a rotary mower

Choose a rotary mower if appearance and regular upkeep matter to you:

An ornamental lawn that you mow often and keep short.
Collection in a grass box or fine mulching without windrows.
A small to medium-sized garden around the house, where you’ll appreciate manoeuvrability.

Roughly 10 to 15 cm with regular mowing: a rotary mower is the natural choice.
From about 20 to 40 cm and more, especially if the growth is thick or wet: a rotary deck clogs easily. A DAKR drum mower is the safer bet.

If you want a short green carpet in front of the house, a rotary mower with collection or mulching is the logical choice. If you want a meadow and hay, go for DAKR.

Safety and maintenance

before starting, check the area (stones, wires, toys, animals)
wear sturdy footwear, and ear protection with combustion engines
on a slope, mow across it, not straight up and down, if the manufacturer and the terrain allow
with a drum mower, expect flying debris. The guard and the protective net are not there for decoration
never change or clean the blade or the disc with the engine running

1. How does a DAKR drum mower differ from a rotary mower, in one sentence?

2. Can a STIHL or MTD rotary mower handle a tall meadow?

On a slightly overgrown lawn, yes, if you slow down and raise the cutting height. We don’t recommend using one on a thick, metre-high meadow. That’s what a DAKR drum mower is for.
